WHAT IS THE AMERICAN SONGWRITING AWARDS?Back to Top
The American Songwriting Awards is an annual, international contest and awards event for songwriters and musicians. The mission of the American Songwriting Awards is to help launch the careers of talented artists and provide an international platform for their work to be recognized. ASA is designed to promote excellence and standout achievement in the art of songwriting.
ASA offers exposure and the opportunity to have songs heard by influential industry leaders in today’s highly competitive world of music creation. Its panel of experienced judges is composed of current and former working music industry professionals and astute listeners with thorough insights and understanding of today’s music industry. Unlike other songwriting competitions, ASA’s judges are chosen primarily for their ability to recognize talent and does not select judges based solely on popularity.
DOES MY SONG HAVE TO BE ORIGINAL?Back to Top
Yes. While sampling is accepted in the background or as a filler sound, songs and lyrics must be original. Public domain songs are unacceptable, even if they are accompanied by original lyrics. ASA awards original compositions in order to recognize ingenuity and creativity. One exception to this rule is the Dance category, which by its nature is very often a composition of others’ music.
CAN I ENTER MY SONG(S) FROM A COUNTRY OTHER THAN THE USA?Back to Top
Yes. ASA is an international competition that encourages international collaboration and inspiration. Participants are welcome from all over the world.
ARE THERE ANY AGE REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRANTS?Back to Top
No. ASA welcomes entrants of all ages. However, minors must have the authorization of their parents or guardians in order to compete.
WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM TIME LENGTH FOR A SONG ENTRY?Back to Top
There is no set time limit for ASA entries. However, contestants are advised to consider the commercial appeal of songs lasting more than ten minutes.
WHEN WILL WINNERS BE NOTIFIED?Back to Top
Winners will be notified via email or phone approximately one month after our final entry deadline. From the pool of Winners from each category, one overall Grand Prize Winner will be chosen and announced at our annual Awards Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Ensure that your submission email is correct, and check your junk folder for messages from ASA. If you are not contacted for any reason please check the ASA website for updated information. ASA is not liable for incorrect entry email addresses or phone numbers.
DOES ASA GIVE FEEDBACK?Back to Top
Yes, the American Songwriting Awards is proud to offer the option of receiving detailed Judge Feedback on your entry. For an optional fee of $75, your professional judge will prepare a multi-page written assessment of your song's strengths and weaknesses, including insights as to how your work was scored along with detailed commentary and constructive criticisms regarding the judge's overall impressions of your songwriting including specific feedback and advice regarding each of the judging criteria.
CAN I ENTER EVERY YEAR?Back to Top
Yes. Songwriters and songs may be re-submitted annually. Every year new judges bring fresh opinions to the American Songwriting Awards. However, Winners and the annual Grand Prize Winner may not re-submit winning or grand prize winning songs. Former Winners and Grand Prize Winners are eligible to submit new songs or songs that have not previously won.
CAN I ENTER MULTIPLE SONGWRITING COMPETITIONS?Back to Top
Yes. We are a non-exclusive songwriting competition and encourage songwriters to promote their works however possible.
DOES ASA OWN MY SONG ONCE I HAVE ENTERED IT?Back to Top
No. Songwriters retain all rights to their songs, lyrics, copyright, and intellectual property.
MAY I ENTER A SONG THAT I WROTE IF THE RIGHTS AREN'T MINE?Back to Top
Yes. However, songwriters must have written permission from the publisher or rights owner in order to enter the contest. Failure to comply with this will result in disqualification.
DO THE JUDGES LISTEN TO EVERY ENTRY?Back to Top
Absolutely. A well-qualified judge listens to each and every entry in the contest. This committee of trained music industry professionals is respectful and careful while considering each entry. Those songs that qualify as Nominees during the initial judging process are then submitted to the final executive judging panel for further consideration as Official Finalists, Winners and the overall Grand Prize.
Both the preliminary judges and the executive judges consider music for its quality and merits and evaluate it based on the judging criteria. Entries are not evaluated for recording quality or vocal performances. For more information about the judging criteria used by the selection committee and judges, please read Judging Process & Criteria.
